One of my fondest memories of Dexter was how he would introduce tunes at his concerts around the late-1970s and early 1980s. Like when he'd just say "Harold Arlen" and then start playing "Come Rain or Come Shine." Added: August 4, 2010 X |

I was thinking of Dex during this year's Oscars. I was totally bummed that neither the great acting or the directing in "Goodbye, Solo" was recognized this year. A gross injustice! That, of course, got me to fuming once again about the Academy not giving Dex the Oscar for his absolutely phenomenal performance in "Round Midnight". Everytime I think about it, or watch "Round Midnight" (which I do faithfully several times a year), I get p***ed (pardon my French) at the Academy for yet another gross injustice. Every move, every look, every word from Dex in that movie was pure gold. What an incredible performance! I wish the Academy had the decency to look back at some of the mistakes they've made and give a special award to atone. Wishful thinking, I know. Dex--we love you!!! Added: April 23, 2010 X |

When I was in my early 20's, I had the opportunity to promote a concert of Dexter's in October, 1977 in Lincoln, Nebraska and met him and the members of his band (George Cables, Rufus Reed, and Eddie Gladden). I believe I remember correctly that our gig was Eddie's first time to drum with the quartet. For the soundcheck, they played "Moten Swing" with Dexter calling out over his shoulder for the first chorus the name of each chord to George and Rufus a moment before it was supposed to sound, with Dexter playing a snatch of the melody and then taking the mouthpiece out of his mouth so he could shout out the next chord. That was my chance to hear Dexter's tenor sound from 20 feet away. Man oh man! The great "Tanya" performances that this quartet would do at their concerts and later record, started with our show. I remember George Cables doing a beautiful, rhapsodic solo on "Body And Soul". When Dexter re-entered on his soprano sax, he quoted Stevie Wonder's "Isn't She Lovely". Jay McShann was playing at a club in Lincoln that night. When Jay had a break between sets and they saw each other , Dexter stood up, shouted "Hootie!" in his deep voice and gave Jay a bear hug that nearly lifted him off the floor. Jay McShann was very solidly built and was not a man who could easily be lifted. Added: April 6, 2010 X |

Woody III had this link posted on FB, which took me to Dex's great site. Instantly I was transported, through listening to "Lady Bird", back to the Airliner in Miami, December 1977, then a few years later when LTD played a few times at the 2nd Jazz Forum. Best to Maxine! Long Live Dexter! Added: April 2, 2010 X |

First heard LTD in 1974 on a friend's borrowed LP. Have been a fanatic ever since. Lucky enough to catch him at the Village Vanguard in June 1979, and that hooked me for life. There is an energy, intelligence, and good humor to his music that is distinctive, charming, and timeless. There have been many musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing and learning about in the yea**ince, but I always come back to Dex, and still hear something new and exciting every time I play a cut. What a blessing to have been introduced to his music! Added: February 27, 2010 X |

Dexter Gordon is my favorite saxophone player. I have a majority of his CD's. I listen to his music all the time. He was truly the master of his music. Added: February 9, 2010 X |
